Purpose
In 2024, HACO identified a need to support our elder community in getting out of their homes, staying active, and engaging with others. In response, we launched a program for our Hmong elders to foster connection, reduce social isolation, and support mental engagement. Using bingo as a fun and accessible activity, the program encourages focus, memory, and social interaction while providing a welcoming space for elders to gather.
Led by Elder Facilitator Samantha Her and supported by volunteers, board members, and family members, sessions are hosted at accessible locations throughout the Portland metro area. Each gathering includes a complimentary meal celebrating Hmong culture, prizes to promote participation and enjoyment, and opportunities for conversation and getting active.
Over time, the program has grown into a vibrant, supportive community of regular attendees. Many sessions bring together multiple generations, with three to four generations practicing Hmong numbers and learning from one another—a heartwarming reflection of the program’s role in preserving language, culture, and intergenerational bonds.
Through this initiative, HACO continues to create inclusive spaces that nurture belonging, cultural pride, and the overall well-being of elders and their families, while promoting social engagement, mental stimulation, and a sense of joy in community participation.
